Abstract:

Nonlinear static procedures (NSPs) are now widely used to predict seismic demands in building structures. Simplified versions of NSP, based on invariant load patterns, such as methods recommended in ATC40 and FEMA- 356, have some limitations in terms of their inability to account for higher modes effects and the modal variations resulting from inelastic behavior. As a result, the recent years have witnessed the introduction of the so–called adaptive pushover methods, which unlike their conventional pushover counterparts feature the ability to account for the effects of higher modes and progressive stiffness degradation on the distribution of seismic story forces. In this paper the accuracy of displacement-based adaptive pushover (DAP) method in predicting the capacity of concrete structure building is explored, through comparison with the results of Incremental Dynamic Analyses (IDA). It is concluded that DAP method provides improved predictions of the dynamic response characteristics of irregular concrete frames.
