Abstract:

Several reports are recorded the formation of suddenly settlement of soils in different parts of the world after saturation of low density sandy soils. This type of soils are named as collapsible soils which can be found near the dams, power plants, agricultural fields, and other places that variations of groundwater and saturation changes of low density sandy soils are expected. They are mainly sandy soils with silt and clay which have some weak bonding. Upon wetting, the weak bonds will be broken, which will be followed by a significant volume reduction of soil. In general, there has been very little attention on the influence of clay particle size on the geotechnical behavior of these types of soils. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of very small clay particles and magnitude of applied load on the behavior properties of collapsible soils. To achieve this objective two nano clays were laboratory added to the collapsible sandy soils. These nano clays were Cloisite®20A because of its very low PI and hydrophilic characteristics and prepared natural nano clay by grinding bentonite. Several series of odometer tests were performed on laboratory prepared samples. The achieved results indicate that there is a specific clay quantity that provides the largest collapse index for a specific collapsible sandy soil. It is shown that samples collapse potential increased with load increasing but applying enormous load causes it to decrease.
