Abstract:

In this paper, optimal tuning of PID controller gains through a highly reputed natured-inspired algorithm, calledfirefly algorithm for drilling machine is introduced. In fact, the main aim is to tune PID parameters properly tominimize the integral of absolute error (IAE). To gain better perspective on the benefits of employing firefly algorithm,the simulation results are compared to the results gained from PSO-based tuned PID and a traditional PID controllertuning technique called Ziegler-Nichols. Therefore, this paper describes how to apply firefly algorithm for tuning PIDcontroller. First of all, a model of the drilling machine is introduced. PID controller, then, was tuned by the fireflyalgorithm and applied to the plant. The whole closed-loop control system was simulated in MATLAB. The resultsdepicted that time-domain performance criteria have gotten more improved by using firefly algorithm considerablycompared to applying particle swarm optimization and Ziegler-Nichols technique.
