Abstract:

As a sign of social civilization, sports play a very important role in people's life. Likewise, sports news and reports are increasingly finding their ways to people's life. However, little comparative research has been carried out to analyze its stylistic features across different languages. Stylistics is the study of the characteristic of the language used in a particular context to establish which specific choices are made by individuals and social groups (Adebayo, 1997). Stylistic features are subdivided into four groups: phonological, graphological, syntactic, and semantic features (Carter, 1992). This study has attempted to analyze and compare stylistic features of English and Persian sports news items. The materials were collected from selected English and Persian language sports newspapers. Differences and similarities on the levels of cohesion, syntax, semantics, morphology and graphology were found and discussed.
