Abstract:

One of the conventional and efficient methods of separation is liquid -liquid extraction. In this study liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) were measured for [water (1) + glycolic acid (2) + isoamyl alcohol (3)] at 298.2 K and atmospheric pressure .The cloud-point titration method was used to determine solubility data. The concentration of each phase was determined by acidimetric titration, the Karl-Fisher technique, and refractive index measurements. The studied ternary system exhibits type-1 behavior of LLE, where only one liquid pair (water + solvent) is partially miscible and the two liquid pairs (acid + water) and (acid + solvent) are totally miscible. The reliability of the experimental tie-line data was find out through the Othmer-Tobias and Hand correlation. Finally, the distribution coefficients and separation factors have been measured in order to evaluate the ability of organic solvent to extract glycolic acid from water. Values of the separation factor (from 3.25 to 9.70) confirm the ability of this organic solvent for extraction of glycolic acid from aqueous solutions.
