Abstract:

The present study was about translating idioms and contrastive analysis of translating idioms in the book known as Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen, translated by two professional Persian translators Mr. Reza Rezaei and Mrs. Shamsolmoolook Masaheb. The present study aimed to consider problems the translating idioms that translators faces with them, improvement to translation idioms, and investigate the applicability of many strategies in translation of idioms from English into Persian language. It also aimed to find out which strategy has the highest frequency applied by the two translators. In order to get this aim, the novel of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and its corresponding translated Persian version were analyzed. The finding indicated that out of one hundred fifty four idioms found, the strategies used for the analysis in the study were proposed by many theoreticians such as Baker (1992), Newmark (1988), Straksiene (2009), Nida and Taber (1969), Wright (1999), and Larson (1984). The results of the analysis showed that the most frequency used strategy for translating idioms was Baker‟s strategy translation by paraphrase and, explanatory paraphrase of Newmark and Straksiene. Moreover, strategies the above mentioned, two translators used strategy of Nida and Taber, wright and Larson in translating idioms the comparison of the two translations indicated that Rezaei used Persian idioms in translating source text idioms the most but, Masaheb the least. Therefore, my opinion about translations of two translators in the study, Rezaei faithful to source text more than Masaheb, and he translated more idiomatic, but she translated more literary.
