Abstract:

FSW has been successfully used to weld similar and dissimilar cast and wrought aluminum alloys, especially for aircraft aluminum alloys generally present low weldability by traditional fusion welding process. This paper focuses on the microstructural and mechanical properties of the friction stir welding (FSW) of 7075 aluminum rolled plate. The tool for welding was rotated at speeds ranging from 710 to 1500 rpm under various traverse speeds. Macrostructural analysis was performed to check the weld quality (defective or defect free). Cross-sectioning of the welds for metallographic analysis in planes perpendicular to the welding direction and parallel to the weld crown was also performed. The mechanical properties of the weld were determined using a combination of conventional hardness and tensile testing, from this investigation it was found that according to microstructural and mechanical properties of samples, weld joint with high quality was formed.
