Abstract:

The aim of the current paper is to present a novel exact solution for the temperature distribution during Friction stir welding (FSW). The thermal cycles experienced by material in the weld zones can lead to over-aging, coarsening as well as dissolution of strengthening precipitates. Therefore, an exact temperature calculation results in more accurate prediction of the mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of the weld. In the current article, an exact solution to the problem in an analytical form is obtained by applying the Green’s function method and are compared with the numerical results. The comparison reveals that analytical results and the data obtained by the numerical method are in a good agreement and presents the Green’s function a practical method to determine the temperature rise due to the FSW process when compared with experimental data leads to obtaining the real heat input by the FSW tool.
