Abstract:
One of sheet severe plastic deformation (SPD) operation, namely constrained groove pressing (CGP), is studied here in order to investigate the influence of this operation on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of 2024 aluminum and AZ91D magnesium sheets. With this regard, three cycles of CGP have been conducted for these annealed sheets. Optical microscopy (OM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to discuss the microstructure and precipitations evolution. Average grain size of the annealed workpieces was decreased to 11 µm and 14 µm after one pass at 300 ˚C for 2024 Al and AZ91D Mg alloys, respectively. By measuring microhardness, it was found that the annealed sample had highest homogeneity with minimum inhomogeneity factors of 5.80 and 1.86 for 2024 Al and AZ91D Mg alloys. The complementary tests revealed that ultimate tensile strength of the annealed sheets was increased by 21% and 7% for these alloys after performing the first CGP pass.
