Abstract:
The basis of this research is to investigate Gerard Genette`s anachronies in Leo Tolstoy`s novella The Death of Ivan Ilych. This paper applies Gerard Genette, a critic of international stature that has built a systematic theory of narrative discourse. It focuses on how Tolstoy uses anachronies in his work. When and why does his narrator use anachronies? The techniques which have been tried to put into use include Genette`s Order , Frequency and Duration as well as other anachronies such as prelopsis and analopsis. Tolstoy uses anachrony when the narrator elaborately goes in the character`s mind to reveal the self-created illusive world he or she is living in, which is sometimes in contrast with the reality known to the reader or the narrator is trying to show
