Abstract:

Introduction: It has been suggested that patients who have undergone Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) could suffer from eating disorders such as Bulimia nervosa (BN) and Anorexia nervosa (AN), therefore further investigation is required in this regard. Since eating disorders may affect the outcome of gastric bypass surgery, in this study, we aimed to assess the association between eating disorders and weight changes following gastric bypass surgery. Methods: In this study 36 patients completed a self-report questionnaire Ahwaz Eating Disorder Scale after two years of their bypass surgery. The scores of AN and BN were assessed, and data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The student t-test was conducted to illustrate the degree of correlation. Cutoff points were considered based on population mean. Results: 32 of the participants were women and four were men. Mean BMI kg/m2 prior to the surgery was 45.9 ± 6.2 and in the postoperative phase was 29.7 ± 4 which significantly decreased (p<0.001). Moreover, 19 patients had Ahwaz scores under 11 (53%), 22 had AN score of less than 8 (61%) and 22 had BN score of less than 3 (61%). However, preoperative BMI, postoperative BMI and percentage of weight change had no significant relationship with any of the three indices of the questionnaire (Ahwaz scores, AN and BN scores). Conclusions: Although half of the patients in this study suffer from eating disorders, these study findings suggest that changes in the patients weight are not related to the eating disorders after the bypass surgery.
