Abstract:

The Port Salalah Container Terminal in Oman is an integral part of the Maersk -SeaLand international transportation system. The new terminal, strategically located on the main shipping route between Europe and the Far East, serves as a transshipment point between large liner vessels and smaller feeder vessels calling at ports throughout the Gulf Region, on the Indian subcontinent, and along the coast of eastern Africa. The new terminal has four 305 m long container vessel berths and a developed land area of approximately 50 hectares to support the termin al operations. It has a water depth of 16 m to accommodate the largest container vessels. The strategic siting of the transshipment terminal, the terminal operating structure, and special design features of the new facility are discussed.
