Abstract:

Berm recession width in berm breakwaters is an important parameter to estimate the stability of this type of structure. If berm recession width is more than its primary width, berm breakwaterwill be damaged and become unstable. As a result; such structures will not be able meet designer’s demand, see figure (1). A number of investigations on berm breakwaters have been conducted to estimate the amount of berm recession width in the past decays. The results of theseresearches have generated different relationships one of which is the relationship that Torum (2000) has presented. This relationship is presented for homogeneous berm breakwaters that are made of two layers. In Torum relationship some effects and parameters have not yet beenconsidered such as initial berm width and berm distance from water level. Considering the widespread use of this relationship in designing of berm breakwaters and the existing structural differences such as terms of more layers and different curve width aggregation in the structuresthat are made in Iran with other samples in the world, it is thus necessary to modify and correct the estimated true berm recession width. For this purpose, a series of physical model tests were conducted in the hydraulic laboratory of Tarbiat Modares University. In this research, 120 testshave been conducted and the effects of various parameters such as aggregate nominal diameter, the primary berm width, water depth in the structures toe and berm distance from water level have been considered.
