Abstract:The major cause of deterioration on steel-reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environments, is corrosion of the reinforcing steel. This deterioration ismost evident on substructure components (e.g., foundations, footers, pilings, etc.); however, reinforcing steel corrosion can also be present on superstructurecomponents (e.g., bridge decks, beams, pile caps, etc.). Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials have emerged as an alternative for producing reinforcing bars forconcrete structures. Fiber-reinforced polymer reinforcing bars offer advantages over steel reinforcement because they are noncorrosive . The primarymotivation of this paper is to investigate the ductility of concrete beams reinforced with brittle FRP composite.
