Abstract:

Today, road accidents are one of the most important causes of death in worldwide.Generally, road accidents can be divided into two groups’ single-vehicle accident and several-vehicles crashes (at least two-vehicles). Font-on road accidents is one of the several-vehicles accidents by high severity crashes. Statistics in developing countries such as IRAN show, front-on road accidents involve about %40 fatal suburban road accidents. ILAM is west province of IRAN which has high statistical front-on accident in its roads network. In this research, the main factors to severity front-on arterial two-way suburban road accidents were identified by using logit model. Data of road accidents between 2011to2017 were used from police’ database reports and characteristic of geometric design from GIS software ILAM’s road and transportation department. Results show, the parameters of geometry design such as width, straight roads ‘segment and curve roads’ segment (with slope or without slope) are significant factors to severity front-on accidents in the main two-lane suburban roads. The width of the roads is the most important in these types of roads crashes, severity of front-on accidents decrease by increasing width of roads. By results of this research, safety traffic engineers can be used to increase safety performance in the main two-lane suburban roads.
