Abstract:

The introduction of segmental technology, with its time saving and economic advantages, has resulted in widespread use of segmental prestressed box girder construction for mediumto moderately long span bridges. An important development in the construction of box girderbridges is the use of external post-tensioning tendons in which tendons are external to theconcrete cross section, as opposed to traditional internal tendons which are contained inducts within the webs or flanges. External prestressing has been proven cost-effective andtechnically attractive worldwide. However, in these structures, exposed tendons are prone tocorrosion. In addition, flexural resistance is of great concern, because the prestressing forcedeveloped in external tendons under ultimate loads is significantly less than that of internaltendons. On the other hand, increasing initial prestressing force rises the risk of cracking inthe girder bridge under service loads and even during the construction. Therefore, innovativeapplication of advanced materials such as fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs), as corrosionresistantmaterials, in combination with high strength materials such as fiber reinforcedconcrete (FRC) is proposed in this study, as a solution being capable of tackling both of theissues.
