Abstract:

Structural damage can occur during the service life of a structure because of unexpectednatural disaster such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wind storms. Engineering strategiesshould be improved to reduce the risk and mitigate damage utilizing resistant damage freedesigns. Therefore, new techniques should be developed to maximize the life safety.Vibration control system is one of these techniques which can absorb and dissipate themovements induced by external forces. As a result, focus of this study is on effectivenessof a passive damping device which is called tuned mass damper (TMD) on a twodimensional multi-storey steel frame. Response displacements of the unequipped andequipped structure are measured using vibration tests on the shaking table. Results of theexperiments show that TMD not only can reduce the structural dynamic response, butalso can modify the structural behavior of the structure.
