Evaluation of locational criteria of Rasht Green Square based on Iranian pattern of urban squares

In the process of specifying the features pertaining to works of a civilization or a society, considering standards resulted from worldview and culture of that civilization or society is a necessary, yet ignored, issue. Consequently, planning and making changes in such works is done without paying attention to local standards. The result is the creation of works lacking structure and principles suitable for architecture of that civilization. In the ancient culture of Iranian urbanism, square assumes a powerful place. Dehkhoda dictionary defines square in this way: an open place around which are houses or shops . Based on this definition, in the past, the word square was used to refer to a broad place in which there is no building. The present paper aims to discuss issues related to Iranian squares and based on studied elements of square, evaluate the locational criteria of Green Square in Rasht which is considered a public square. To this end, after giving an introduction to the issue and providing generalities about it and introducing Green Square, required data are collected through documentary, descriptive, analytic, and field-study research methods. Qualitative and quantitative valuations are then carried out using matrixes of compatibility, capacity, and desirability. Finally, corrective suggestions are provided in the conclusion.
