Abstract:

One of the main challenges of the design of high-rise buildings is to control their lateral displacement. This is due to the fact that the lateral forces are the dominant design forces in these cases. Hence, one of the most important innovations would be inventing methods that decrease the consumption of building materials while increasing the efficiency of the structure. One of the practically efficient methods is the use of outriggers in high-rise buildings. Outriggers are rigid horizontal structures designed to improve building overturning stiffness and strength by connecting the building core (or spine) to distant columns. Although this method has been used for almost 40 years, the optimum placement of outriggers is still a matter of debate. In this paper, the impact of two parameters, namely the location of outrigger centroids and their condensation on the lateral displacement of the top of the building is studied. The conclusions have been drawn by comparison of the results from a large number of analyses of various models. In the optimum model with outriggers, the lateral displacement reduced about 85 percent compared to the case where a core is the sole lateral load bearing system of the structure
