Abstract:Nowadays, ring footings are normally used for special and axisymmetric structures; i.e. reservoirs, cooling towers, etc. In comparison with circle footings, ring footings are more cost-effective. In this paper, properties and geometry of a cooling tower in real dimensions has been used to investigate load-settlement behavior of reinforced and unreinforced ring footings. Study was conducted using 2D finite element method in PLAXIS software. It is shown that, for improving the load-settlement behavior of the ring footing, using geocell instead of geogrid has a significant effect. Composite (equivalent) layer method is used to simulate Geocell layer. In this method, geocell behavior is simulated using a soil layer with higher cohesion and stiffness. In the present study, the effect of thickness of geocell layer and geocell stiffness on pressure-settlement behavior of ring footing has been investigated.
