Abstract:

Present standards for weld seam inspection of tubes by eddy currents use artificial defects to establish a common level of inspection sensitivity. Most often, the artificial defect is a drilled hole with a defined diameter, because such drilled holes can be reproduced easily and reliably. However, the sensitivity level achieved by these standard specifications does no longer fulfill today’s needs, especially when the tubes are intended for automotive applications. To increase inspection sensitivity one could reduce the drilled hole diameter further and further. But these drilled holes do not provide any information about the efficiency of the weld seam inspection throughout the full wall thickness.Internal EDM notches in both longitudinal and transversal direction have been chosen to demonstrate the efficiency of eddy current inspection throughout the full wall thickness as well as to establish a new level of sensitivity, because the volume of notch defects is considerably smaller than the volume of the drilled holes according to standard specifications. The paper describes the optimization of probes to achieve similar sensitivity for both notch orientations. The second part demonstrates the inspection efficiency in depth of the wall thickness by detection of internal notches with decreasing depth into the weld seam.
