Abstract:
The most important parameters in aquifers yield are permeability, porosity and depth to water table which can be determined in lab and field scale. Geophysical methods (such as electrical sounding, induced polarization, ground penetration radar and Electro-seismic) are the most promising methods to determine theses parameters. With new technique of Electro-seismic, the earth is seismically excited and an electromagnetic response is measured. This method, which is based on the conversion of seismic energy to electromagnetic energy in deformable fluid-filled porous rocks, does not only depend on the rock properties but also the fluid (e.g., hydraulic conductivity of aquifer). In fact, a mechanical disturbance that propagates through such a fluid-saturated medium cause a displacement of the solid phase relative to the fluid phase and a resulting shearing of the ions in the electrical double layer (EDL). In this way an electric current is produced in the medium (electrokinetic effect). In this work, the theory of this method (e.g., the fundamentals of acoustic to EM conversion) is discussed; its advantages and limitations and reviewed. We also present some of its applications in the groundwater investigations is the world.
