Abstract:

Regenerated cellulose provides a very important class of basic material for membranes due to the fact that it is a very hydrophilic polymer but not water-soluble. However, operation life time of cellophane is short. In this research surface modification of cellophane membrane was carried out by silver nano crystaline particles. Formation of silver colloids in situ by chemical and photochemical reduction, was performed where Ag nano particles are deposited uniformly on to surface of membrane, with mean diameter of 7.28 nm and a loading content of up to 2.5wt%. The prepared colloidal nano silver solution exhibited an intense absorption band around 440 nm due to the surface plasmon absorbtion., Meanwhile, modified and unmodified membranes characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and scanning electron microscopy (SEM -EDX) to indicate silver particles, and also the surface properties were studied by contact angle and water absorption. In addition to, oxidative resistance, salt permeability and thermal stability were measured on modified and unmodified membrane. As a result modified membrane is more resistant against the oxidative cleavage than the unmodified membrane. Salt permeabilitys were increased after treatment.
