Abstract:

Background and Aim: Breast milk conforms to the nutritional needs of the infant and therefore is the most suitable feed for the infant. The aim of this study was to determine the causes of use of synthetic milk in children under the age of one year covered by Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in 2019.Methods: In this cross-sectional and descriptive study, data collection was done in the year 2019 and census was conducted. data was obtained through electronic records and interviews with the motherand analyzed. Results: A total of 619 children were sampled, 81% complete and 19% were fed supplemented with synthetic milk. The causes of synthetic milk use in these children are multiple (53.5%), not suitable child growth chart (18.4%), mother s chronic illness (11%), taking medicine by mother (2.4%), adoption (1.8%), parental separation (0.8%), mother s death (0.5%) and more. Conclusion: Regarding the results of this study, proper counseling of pregnant and nursing mothers, especially mothers with unsuitable growth in their children, can play an important role in breastfeeding.
