Abstract:
In this study, the tribological behavior of polyetheretherketon (PEEK) composite reinforced with short carbon fibers (20 vol. %) and nano-SiO2 particles (2 wt.% ) were examined. The composites were fabricated by melt-mixing process at 400°C. The polymer was in granulate shape and the original lengthof short carbon fibers was 6mm and the nano-SiO2 particles size was 13nm.The role of nano-SiO2 on tribological properties of PEEK/SCF composite was investigated. Tribological tests were carried out using pin-on-disk apparatus at room temperature in wide pressure range. In order to investigate the wearmechanisms involved in different tribological conditions, SEM observations were performed. Under all condition studied, the nano-SiO2 particles remarkably reduced the friction coefficients. In terms of wear rates, there was a strong dependence on the applied pressure.
