THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIETARY TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY WITH OXIDATIVE STRESS BIOMARKERS IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Limited studies have examined the association between dietary total antioxidant capacities (DTAC) and oxidative stress and results are inconclusive. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between DTAC and oxidative stress biomarkers in postmenopausal women.Methods: The participants were 176 postmenopausal women who selected randomly from health houses and health centers in south of Tehran, Iran. General characteristic data, anthropometric measures including body weight, height, and waist circumference (WC) were determined. The validated 147-item food frequency questionnaire and short from of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to assess the dietary intake and physical activity, respectively. Biochemical indices including serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA) and oxidized-LDL were measured using available kits. DTAC was computed according to the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay using the USDA database. The simple and multivariate linear regression tests were used to assess relationship between DTAC and oxidative stress biomarkers.Results: Women at higher quartiles of DTAC were more educated and had more years since menopause. As expected, women with higher DTAC had fewer intakes of energy and fat, and more carbohydrate intake. After controlling for age, years since menopause, education, WC, dietary supplement use, fiber and energy intake, an inverse association between DTAC and serum MDA ( = -2.25، P < 0.001) were observed. However, the DTAC displayed no significant associations with TAC and Ox-LDL (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that increased DTAC might be associated with decreased oxidative stress among postmenopausal women. Further prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.
