Abstract:

Background and Aim: We aimed to examine the effects of dried Ziziphus vulgaris (Z.vulgaris) consumption on glycemic control, lipid concentrations, liver enzymes, biomarkers of inflammation and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) Methods: This randomized, clinical trial was performed among 76 diabetic patients. Participants were randomly assigned to intake either dried Z. vulgaris (n = 38) or a control group (n = 38) for 3 months. Patients were asked to consume 30 gr dried Z. vulgaris per day. Systolic and diastolic blood was measured and blood samples were taken at baseline and after 3 months intervention to assess TC,TG,HDL-C,LDL-C, HbA1C,FBS,HOMA-IR, QUICKI,AST, ALT, hs-CRP, Apo A, ApoB100. Anthropometric parameters and physical activity were measured before and after the intervention. Results: The consumption of dried Z. vulgaris, compared to the control group, resulted in a significant reduction of insulin (P = 0.02), HOMA-IR (P = 0.01 ),hs-CRP (P = 0.03) and ApoB100 (P=0.03).The increase of QUICKI (P= 0.01) and ApoA1 (P= 0.03) was also seen in the intervention group compared with the control group. There were no significant differences in the serum FBS, HbA1c, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, AST and ALT levels between groups after interventionConclusion: Overall, dried Z. vulgaris consumption for 3 mounts in T2D patients had beneficial effects on serum insulin, HOMA-IR, QUICKI, ApoA1,ApoB100 and hs-CRP levels.
