Abstract:

Background and Aim: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, which is strongly associated with liver dysfunction. Hyperglycemia, through an oxidative stress pathway, damages various tissues. Use of herbal agents has always been an option to treat diseases such as diabetes and an alternative medicine to control its complications. This study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects of hydroalcoholic extract Allium porrum (AP) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Methods: Seventy male rats were randomly divided into 7 groups of ten: Healthy control group, Healthy control group + 100 mg/kg of AP, diabetic control group + distilled water, diabetic treatment groups + 50 mg/kg of AP, diabetic treatment groups + 100 mg/kg of AP, diabetic + 200 mg/kg of AP, positive control group diabetic + 10 mg/kg of metformin. Using intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (stz mg/kg)and nicotinamide (10mg/kg) after 15 minutes diabetes mellitus was induced in rats. After 6 weeks, fasting blood samples were collected. Results: Statistical analysis of the data indicated that AP can significantly decrease serum glucose in the healthy control group receiving 100 mg/kg of AP but no significant difference was seen in lipid profile in all of the groups. Conclusion: Oral administration of AP can reduce blood glucose level, and may be a promising agent in diabetic disease.
