Abstract:

Background and Aim: Pistacia atlantica subsp. kurdica which found in Zagros Mountains of Iran serves as a crucial food source and medicinal plant via inhabitants. This study aimed to assess the effect of P. atlantica extract and essential oil in streptozotocin induced diabetic mice. Methods: Also the chemical componentss of essential oil were investigated through GC-MS and GC-FID.Results: From 55 determined compounds of the essential oil, α-pinene and bornyl acetate were the main ones. In addition, our findings showed that extract administration significantly improved lipid profile, oxidative stress and inflammatory process through decreasing of lipid peroxidation and increasing of total antioxidant capacity as well as modulation of TNFα in serum of diabetic mice. Conclusion: However, the effects of essential oil in diabetes were less than extract in diabetic animals. P. atlantica possessed antioxidant and hypolipidemic properties; therefore it might be applied as a supplement in improvment of diabetes complicates.
