Abstract:

Background and Aim: Oxidative stress is one of the risk factors for patients in the ICU, which can be affected by Vitamin D, but few studies have focused on this, with contradictory results. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin D supplements on oxidative stress markers and isolation of traumatic patients under mechanical ventilation in ICU.Methods: 72 mechanically ventilated traumatic patients that admitted in intensive care unit in the age range of 18-65 years old and receiving only enteral nutrition and vitamin D levels between 10 to 30 ng/ml randomly divided in three groups including control ( n=24) , oral vitamin D ( n=24) and injectable vitamin D ( n=24) for seven days. Oral vitamin D group received pearl vitamin D 50000 daily for six days, injectable vitamin D received a 300,000-unit ampoule and control group received placebo. In baseline and end of the study, SOFA score, TAC, IL-6 level and body composition analysis was evaluatedResults: Vitamin D supplementation in both oral and intravenous vitamin D groups significantly increased TAC, significantly decreased IL6, SOFA, duration of intubation, and duration of hospitalization in ICU as compared to control group. There was no significant difference in the mortality rate in the three groups. In addition, the anthropometric indices of malnutrition in both oral and injectable groups were significantly improved compared to the control groupConclusion: Vitamin D supplementation, both oral and injectable vitamin D, has beneficial effects on oxidative stress and ventilator separation, in patients with trauma
