Abstract:

Background and Aim: No conclusive information is available about the association between Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)-eating plan and chronic kidney disease (CKD).To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to summarize findings on the relation between adherence to DASH diet and risk of CKD.Methods: A systematic search was done by relevant keywords in the online databases for relevant publications up to July 2018.Results: In total, we included 6 prospective cohort studies in the current systematic review and meta-analysis, with a total sample size of 568,156 individuals and 334,129 cases of CKD. Combining 6 effect sizes from 6 cohort studies revealed that adherence to DASH-style diet was inversely associated with risk of CKD (Combined effect size: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.55-0.88, P=0.003). In addition, such finding was also seen in studies with high quality (Combined effect size: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.75-0.89, P< 0.001). Furthermore, based on findings from dose-response analyses, a-5 unit increase in DASH diet score was associated with 4% lower risk of CKD (Combined effect size: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-0.99, P=0.02). However, no significant nonlinear association was found in this regard (Pnonlinearity = 0.75).Conclusion: Adherence to DASH-style diet, as a healthful dietary pattern, may be beneficial for CKD prevention.
