Abstract:

This research reviews four well-known energy dissipation devices (EDD) used in practical structural application and the effect of viscous damper on the behaviour of steel frames. The response of the one, two and five storey steel frames has been investigated through a numerical analysis. The seismic response of the frame, the storey displacements, inter-storey drifts, bending moment in the structural members and natural periods of vibration with EDD and without EDD were calculated and compared. The results showed that the EDD can absorb a portion of the energy induced by the earthquake in to the structure and control the displacement of the structural members.
