Abstract:

Recently, there has been a tremendous research work on the development of food packaging films that can be employed for controlling the microbiological decay of perishable food products [1]. One option is to use packaging to provide an increased margin of safety and quality. The next generation of food packaging may include materials with antimicrobial properties. These packaging technologies could play a role in extending shelf-life of foods and reduce the risk from pathogens. Antimicrobial polymers may find use in other food contact applications as well [2].Thus, the antibacterial properties of polyethylene samples containing silver nanoparticles and thymol were evaluated by disk diffusion method against Aquaculture pathogenic bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila and the diameter of the zone inhibition of bacteria for polyethylene containing Ag nanoparticles was 7.92 mm and polyethylene with 0.5 wt% of thymol, was 7.45 mm, and polyethylene with 1.5 wt% and 5 wt% of thymol had no antimicrobial properties
