Abstract:This study aimed to design a metadata application profile to organize content objects of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences’ libraries. A systematic-analytical approach was used in this research. The study population included content objects in the 23 libraries(central, hospital and college libraries)of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. For Collecting data related to the native features and needs of generating metadata records in these libraries, a questionnaire designed by the researcher.The questionnaire was completed by the librarians of the organization, and structured observation by the researcher of the metadata databases of libraries in the research community.The native needs of libraries and intends of them in the field of information organization was extracted via a checklist (created based on the metadata standards)and taking into account the context of libraries in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, an application profile was designed to organize their content objects. The application profile contains 63 elements including 22mandatory elements and 41 optional elements for describing different kinds of content objects. Among these 63 elements,53 elements have been selected from the UNIMARC format as the basic standard,8 elements have been extracted from the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI),and2 elements have been determined from the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS). Finally, the structure and semantics of the metadata application profile designed based on the context of the libraries to be studied.
