Abstract:

In the present paper, effects of mass and seismic wave propagation within the surrounding foundation on seismic response of an existing arch dam are investigated. Opening or slipping of vertical contrac-tion joints was considered in the analyses. The reservoir was assumed to be compressible and mod-elled using finite element method with appropriate boundary conditions. Viscous condition at the far end boundary of the foundation is used to model radiation effect. DEZ arch dam was selected as case study and excited in MCE. It is found that assuming massless foundation is too conservative and leads to much more value of stress level within the dam body in comparison to modelling mass of the foun-dation rock
