Abstract:

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive-age women in Iran. PCOS is one of the risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MetS). PCOS and MetS have an inflammatory etiologic foundation along with oxidative stress. Selenium is an anti-oxidant micronutrient. Present studyaimed to compare the dietary intake of selenium in PCOS women with and without MetS. Methods: 42 participants eligible for this case control study were selected by convenience sampling method. The case group included 14 PCOS patients with MetS and the control group included 28 PCOS patients without MetS. Dietary intake assessment of selenium was carried out by a 168 item Food Frequency Questionnaire. PCOS and MetS were diagnosed using the Rotterdam criteria and NCEP ATP III respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS22 software and T-test. Significant P-value was considered 0.05. Results: Dietary intake of selenium was significantly lower in PCOS women with MetS than the control group (P <0.001). Conclusion: Regarding the research results, it is suggested that administration of selenium supplementation and the increased consumption of this antioxidant micronutrient in the PCOS patients diet is useful to prevent of MetS occurrence and progression in these patients.
