Abstract:

Backgournd: Foeniculum vulgare (FVE; fennel) is an aromatic plant belonging to Umbelliferae family, which contains various chemicals,LQFOXGLQJ DYRQRLGV DQG FRXPDULQV. ,W KDV EHHQ shown that, the FVE adversely impacts the sperm storage and count. Considering the importance of spermatogenesis regarding the sperm cout and volume, present study was done in order to investigate the effect of FVE on germ cells DNA and RNA contents as well as apoptic phenotypes. Method: To follow up current study, 24 mature male albino mice were randomly divided into control and FVE received (037 mg/kg, 0.75mg/kg and 1.5 mg/kg) groups. The corresponding animals were orally gavaged for 35 days. Following test termination, the animals were euthanized by CO2. The apoptosis index, germ cells total DNA and mRNA damage were evaluated. Results: Observations revealed that the FVE, dose dependently, increased the numbers of cells with DNA and RNA damage/mm2 of tissue versus control group. Moreover, an enhancement of the apoptotic cells number/one mm2 of tissue was revealed in FVEO-received groups.   Conclusion: The findings of the current study illustrated that, the FVE, in a dose dependent manner, results in severe germ cells apoptosis as well as DNA and RNA damage, which in turn is able to pathologically affect the spermatogenesis
