Abstract:
Vehicle exhaust emissions, particularly those from diesel engines, are a major source of air pollution and in recent years have emerged as a growing concern due to their effects on both the environment and human health. Diesel engines have significant fuel economy advantages, and yield relatively low levels of hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds compared to petrol engines but they also have high emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Measurement of diesel particulate matter is an expensive and time consuming process requiring skilled operators and highly protected environments. The alternative is to measure exhaust smoke opacity which is an easy and inexpensive technique hence the reason for its common usage for pollutant measurement in numerous diesel vehicle inspection and maintenance programs around the world. In this experimental study, the gaseous exhaust emissions of a CI (compression ignition) engine using diesel and CNG (compressed natural gas) were measured by a smoke opacimeter and a gas analyser; the opacity data were then used to predict the particulate matter generated during the operation of the engine. In this paper, after presenting a review of the literature, the experimental procedure and data, and the results of the analysis are provided.
