Abstract:

Recently, a new type of artificial muscles has beendeveloped based on nylon twisted yarns and their interestingproperties has made their use in different applications as anactuator of interest. In this paper, we first introduce this typeof actuators which are thermally activated and thenfabrication process and some of the characterization resultsare presented. These actuators can be used in a wide rangeof temperatures between -40 to 200°C. Twelve percentstrain and high force-to-weight ratio are two importantadvantages observed in experiments. The capability to workin frequencies higher than 10 Hz in contraction mode makesthem suitable for using in different applications.
