Abstract:
The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effects of the wing bending deflection angle (B.D.A) on thrust force for different flapping frequencies at 10 degree angles of attack (AOA) in hovering flight. Moreover, the input power is measured in order to assess the power loading of the model. Hence, a four bar mechanism is constructed by the authors which can bend the wing during upstroke while extends it during downstroke. In this research, the wing with three maximum bending deflection angles of 550, 63.70 and 730 is considered to investigate how aerodynamic performance changes with this angle. These wings are compared with the simple flapping wing without deflection. The results show that wing with B.D.A of 55° results in higher thrust generation in comparison with other B.D.As. Furthermore, although the wing with B.D.A=0°, 559 and 63.7° almost wastes equal power, the input power by the wing with B.D.A=73° is maximum. Consequently, the wing with B.D.A of 55° is considered as the best wing in terms of power loading.
