Abstract:
Nonhomogeneous modelling of mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and density are the most important parts of bone analysis using finite element method (FEM).Applying the techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) which measures the Hounsfield Unit may facilitate this process. In this study, an effective method has beensuggested to detennine the HU in cortical bone aI1d diaphysis region using Spiral CT data. To this aim, the CT- scan has been taken from the diaphysis of the human femoral cortical bone by 10 mm cuts along the length of the bone. Determining the HU throughout the Spiral CT data and applying the empirical relationship between HU and tnechanical properties of the bone, grading of mechanical properties such as density and elastic modulus through the length of the femoral bone is modeled. Application of the method proposed in this work results to more accurate and efficient modelling of nonhomogeneous properties of the bone.
