Abstract:

For many years, a great amount of work has been done on the problems of symmetrical multiple radial cracks in the fimctionally graded thick walled cylinder. But, up to now, nothing has been done on asymmetrical multiple radial cracks in functionally graded thick walled cylinder. This paper deals with two asymmetrical radial cracks, and the stress intensity factor due to two kinds of internal pressure and external tension has been calculated using finite element method and the influence of crack configurations stress intensity factor (SIF) is discussed. In this purpose, reference SIFs are calculated from the results of finite element analysis, using a modified domain of the J integral. Subsequently, SIFs have been calculated for different combinations of cylinder, crack depth, and material gradation by implementing the Finite element method. Moreover, the effects of variation in the elastic modulus ratio on SIFs have been investigated and the results are displayed in the graph.
