Abstract:

Background: Pain is a common and painful symptom in cancer patients that affects their lives and sometimes has more impact than the cancer disease. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of different non-pharmacological interventions such as music on pain reduction in cancer patients. Recent reviews indicate that music therapy is a profession which meets multiple physical, social, and psychological needs. The purpose of this study was to review of the literature on the impact of music therapy on pain relief in cancer patients.Methods & Materials: The resulting article was searched by reputable databases including Ovid, Elsevier, Pubmed, Google scholar, from 2000 to 2018. 60 articles with entered keywords were found after summarizing 12 related articles. By reviewing these articles, case-control, and cohort studies were selected and reviewed. The total number of articles obtained at this stage was 6 articles.Results: According to the review, music has a positive effect on patient with cancer. All articles found that music reduced the sensation of pain. Music was listened usually 20 minutes to 1 hour per day. Classical music were widely used in the studies. The decrease of depression was also regarded in several articles. Also in the literature review, none of the studies reported adverse effects and side effects for music therapy.Conclusion: Studies have shown that music therapy can be used as a complementary treatment to reduce pain in cancer patients. In addition, music therapy can reduce depression in these patients and is an inexpensive treatment option.Due to the importance of pain in cancer patients and the limitations of pharmacological therapies, it is important to pay particular attention to non-pharmacological methods such as music therapy
