Efficient Elimination of Methyl Orange Dye from Wastewater through Recyclable Bio-intercalate LDH-Fe3O4/PVA Nanocomposite

Abstract:

Green chemistry in the recent years has many interest in the world. One important aspect ofthis field is due to the use of low-cost and eco-friendly materials and methods in the synthesisprocess [1]. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as hydrotalcite like compounds,have attracted attention, which has led to a variety of applications [2, 3]. In this study intercalatedLDH (I-LDH) with biosafe and anionic organic diacid was produced with the coprecipitationmethod. An effective intercalation of the examined diacid in the LDH layers was confirmedwith variety of spectroscopic analysis. Fig.1(a) shows the increasing in the basal spacingof I-LDH in compared to the pure LDH. Then, I-LDH samples were composited with thepre-synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (I-LDH@Fe3O4) through ultrasonic irradiation.LDH@Fe3O4 composite was dispersed in the matrix of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) throughultrasonic irradiation and the physiochemical properties of prepared nanocomposites (NCs)were studied. Finally, the performance of NC 6 wt% as an efficient magnetic adsorbent wasstudied for removal of poisonous methyl orange from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorptioncapacity of NC 6 wt% was about 97 % (Fig. 1(b)).
