Abstract:

It is known that metallic structural members become hardened during large cyclic deformations. This phenomenon is called cyclic hardening. The negligence of cyclic hardening in ductile elements, such as short link beams, may cause a significant underestimation of extra loads that are imposed on adjacent members or connections during seismic loads. Therefore, it is required to estimate the quantity of this phenomenon. In this paper, a well-known approach considering both Isotropic and Kinematic cyclic hardening characteristics is employed and the calibrated data for five different steel grades, with yield point values from 100 (MPa) to (485 (MPa) are presented. Subsequently, in order to evaluate the accuracy of the method, four different characteristic models are utilized for simulating of short link beams under extreme cyclic loading and the results were compared with those of experimental tests. It is proved that the proposed calibrated material models are capable of predicting the cyclic hardening behavior precisely
