Abstract:

Concrete structures make up about half of the existing structures in the world. Concrete moment frame system and concrete moment frame along with concrete shear walls are two commonly used concrete systems that are widely used. Most of the regulations on these structures have set many criteria for coping with seismic forces; however, they have not referred to the design of these structures against instantaneous dynamic loads such as blasting or collision with cars. If the mentioned factors cause a failure of one of the key elements of the structure, such as a column, it may lead to a total or partial failure of the structure. Accordingly, it is quintessential to check this structure against progressive collapse. In this study, using finite element method and running ABAQUS software, a 20-floor concrete building with two types of structural systems and two types of column elimination scenarios were evaluated. Numerical results were verified using laboratory outputs. The results of this study showed that the structure was more critical in the case of the elimination of the side column than the corner column. It was also observed that there was not much difference between the responses of different lateral systems to progressive collapse.
