THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS PREVENTING SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONG ADOLESCENTS: A REVIEW ARTICLE STUDY

Abstract:
Background and Aim : Substance abuse in dolescent is a public health issue. Due to its long-lasting effects, it is one of the central topics of prevention and health promotion adolescence. The aim of this study was to assess the most important factors preventing substance abuse among adolescents.Methods : PubMed, CINAHL Plus, EMBASE, SID and Scopus were searched for studies that were related to the factor assossiated with substance abuse among adolescent. Finally 35 scientific studies conducted during 2010- 2019 were collected.Results : The review highlights school-based interventions based on a combination of social competence and social influence approaches have shown protective effects against drugs and cannabis use. The following interventions to prevent smoking may possibly be effective: i) mass-media campaigns, ii) school-based interventions that emphasize social skills, iii) parenting style. Among interventions for alcohol use, school-based alcohol prevention interventions have been associated with reduced frequency of drinking, while family-based interventions have a small but persistent effect on alcohol misuse among adolescents. Conclusion : These findings suggest that the role of school and family education and social media can be helpful in preventing substance abuse. Future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of specific interventions components with standardized intervention and outcome measures.
