Abstract:

According to Makinen (2010, p.53), fantasy literature is a category of fiction describing things not actually present : something impossible, unimaginable in terms of the rules of our world, even supernatural . This study is conducted in order to determine whether there is a relationship between the Iranian students’ translation quality and their level of imagination with regard to the translation of fantasy literature. To this end, both a production test of translation and a Nelson English Language Proficiency Test are administered to 40 students of English translation at Islamic Azad University of Quchan and Mashhad. Following, a standardized imagination questionnaire and a translation task are administered to the participants. Their translations are evaluated by Goff-Kfouri’s (2005) rubric. The results from a Pearson correlation statistical analysis show a significant correlation between the participants translation quality and their level of imagination. Furthermore, a multiple regression analysis reveals that between the participants’ graduation level and imagination power, graduation level is a significant predictor of Iranian translation students translation ability.
