Abstract:

Proportional navigation (PN) is an effective guidance law in meeting a constant speed target. However, it requires some extra provisions to be able to intercept a maneuvering target. The optimal guidance law (OGL) and its offspring, the augmented proportional navigation (APN), are devised in this line. Another scheme is Integral Sliding Mode (ISM) which lowers substantially the miss distance (MD) in the cost of disappointing control effort (Ceff). Reducing both MD and Ceff may be accomplished using a multiphase algorithm. A setup of APN, OGL and ISM is proposed to enhance the strength of each and disregard their weaknesses. The overhead supervisory control is managed by an empirically tuned fuzzy controller. The results indicate that an APN-OGL-ISM triplet multiphase guidance system yields the best interception in case of a constant acceleration target. Miss distance of as low as 0.355m, under control effort comparable to OGL, is what can be accomplished. This is the best that the algorithms alone or in a combination can deliver in fighting against a highly maneuvering target.
