Epidemiology of bacterial vaginosis in Iranian women

Abstract:

Background: Vaginal infection is one of the most common causes of female genital tract infections and the most important cause of women referral to clinics.whereas more than 10 million visits are made all over the world in a year.The present study has been done to read out the epidemiology of bacterial vaginosis in Iranian women.Methods: The present study was conducted through systematic review and meta-analysis.Accessed articles through systematic searches in Web of Science, Pub Med, Scopus, MAG Iran, Iranmedex, Irandoc, SID and google scholar databases using keywords from bacterial vaginosis, women, Iran, and subject to time limits 2000 up to 2016. To analyze the data, the software Stata 12 and the fixed or random effect model were used to calculate the mean difference and confidence interval (95%), as well as to evaluate the homogeneity and heterogeneity of the Chi2 and I2tests. Results: Anaerobic bacteria in the vaginal secretions were: peptostraptoxic, peptococcal, bacterioid, bacterium and lactobacillusfetid discharge (88.4%), watery discharge (80%), gray yellow discharge (55%), painful intercourse (41.6%) and vaginal ignition (18.3%) were the main symptoms of vaginosis.In general, the prevalence of vaginosis in Iranian women was 18% (CI: 0.14-0.22).The highest prevalence was in Yousefy s study (65%) in Hamedan and the lowest in Akbrian (Tehran) and Abu Tourabi (Qazvin) studies with 2%. Conclusion: Providing women with the necessary training to address health issues, regular examinations and screening are recommended.
